Summary
Experiencing Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma, or Burnout is unfortunately a common occurrence for professionals in the mental health field, and is particularly common amongst mental health professionals working with trauma victims. This workshop will differentiate between Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma, and Burnout, as well as help participants identify the signs and symptoms of each and measure their own current compassion fatigue. Once signs and symptoms are identified, there are things we as professionals can do, both individually and organizationally, to decrease the potential or the exacerbation of Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma. This workshop will demonstrate, practice, and discuss several techniques and interventions to be used in and out of the office to decrease Burnout, Vicarious Trauma, and Compassion Fatigue for those professionals confronted daily by others’ trauma. Several techniques learned in this workshop can be used therapeutically with clients to assist in decreasing trauma symptoms. It is important for mental health professionals to take care of themselves in order to best serve their clients. This workshop will assist professionals in strengthening their own self-care.
