Summary

Being a survivor of sexual abuse can be difficult and confusing for anyone. As children we are encouraged to be independent, strong and assertive. Having a traumatizing experience that possibly affects all areas of our lives can be difficult to overcome, especially without the aide of therapy. For men, the first step on the road to recovery can be the most difficult. Admitting being a victim of sexual abuse can be debilitating. In our presentation, we will present the many facets of treating adult survivor men and how to adjust the typical modes of therapy to better suit the needs of male survivors.

Participants will learn the various definitions, prevalence, myths and facts of treating adult male survivors of sexual abuse. They will understand the different stages of treatment as well as interventions and tools to utilize with clients. This will enhance the practice of social work by increasing the participant’s knowledge and expertise in working with this population.
